Virginia State has several nicknames, and the oldest is the “Old Dominion.” The nickname “Cavalier State” became popular after the American Civil War.

The state’s motto, Sic Semper Tyrannis, translates from Latin as “Thus always to tyrants” and is used on the state seal and later on the flag. Virginia has also been called the “mother of presidents” as eight Virginians have been presidents of the United States.

Virginia has 42,774.2 square miles (110,784.7 km2), including 3,180.13 square miles (8,236.5 km2) of water, making it the 35th largest state by area. It borders Maryland and Washington, D.C. to the north and east; the Atlantic Ocean to the east; North Carolina to the south; Tennessee to the southwest; Kentucky to the west; and West Virginia to the north and west. The main routes are usually assigned single or double-digit numbers, and most numbers from 1 to 50 follow a typical geographic pattern established in 1927. Interstate 76.
